Rock And Roll Is Bursting With Smart, Insightful, Relevant Artists. Phil Lewis Isn't One Of Them. [UPDATE]

Oh those frisky glamsters and their outrageous barbs! At a show in Maryland on Friday night, L.A. Guns frontman Phil Lewis attempted some sort of weird Prince tribute which I'm sure sounded incredibly epic in his mind but by the time his mouth finished moving, Phil had managed to insult pretty much every African American on the planet with this jaw-dropping slice of stupidity:

"The problem is, right now — and I'm not gonna be a racist about it — but black people are all one-dimensional. We need more Princes, man. We need less fucking rappers and more people like Prince."There, I said it."Blabbermouth breaks down the whole damned shit show here.

In the meantime, somebody needs to write this on the top of Phil's setlists: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."

Still mired in the delusion that prefacing a dim-witted racist insult with a line like "I'm not gonna be racist about it" somehow gives you free pass to be super racist, Phil Lewis sunk a long range racism three-pointer by pulling the "I used to have a black friend" card. Realizing that he is defending his racism using the oldest and most ineffective non-sequitur in the book, Phil tried to get in front of it by clarifying that in this case, he was really, really good friends with this particular black person, essentially hitching his entire professional well-being and financial future on a black man! So look all you "PC" and "mainstream black media" people, if anybody gets a free pass for slagging off the world's African American population, it's Phil.In summary:

1. You can say whatever racist shit you'd like as long as you preface it by saying it's not racism; and
2. Even if you do insult an entire race of people, the "I have a [insert maligned race here] friend" actually does work if you guys worked together at some point
