In the summer of 2006, I was living in a little beach cottage in La Jolla, just a couple blocks away from the ocean. Really quiet little neighborhood with the bedroom off in the back of the house. My two dogs would sleep on the bed with me and each morning we’d wake up together- one of us would stir, waking the other two and the day would begin.
I had this Bose alarm clock where I could use a CD for the wake up sound, and that summer I was using Belle and Sebastian’s The Life Pursuit album for my wake up music.
It was the most insignificant, most ordinary and most beautiful moments of that summer- the song “Dress Up In You” began softly wafting from the clock to wake us up. I picked my head up and reached for the remote so I could turn the alarm off, but Cabo, my golden retriever, picked her little head up, yawned, and nuzzled her head back into my side to go back to sleep. I sat there and listened to the song while my two little dogs were snuggled up against me, all of us catching one final snooze before the day began.
Whenever I hear that song begin, with its light little melody softly rising from the piano, I think of that perfect little moment and smile.
